A Mission Bite from CBF: Helping Me to Be ThereRelationships are tough in the best of times, and we are not in the best of times. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it an increase in tensions in many households, greater irritability, and unfortunately, an increase in domestic violence. Domestic violence may be emotional or physical. Both are damaging to mind, body and spirit.Trauma is stored in the body when it is not released. Telling someone is crucial to the healing process. Many never tell and healing is thwarted. Telling is essential if one is to be able to put down the trauma and not carry it forward into all of life, but telling someone is hard. It takes courage to tell your story to another human being.I want to honor that courage every time I am called in on a case. I usually spend more time building capacity among social workers helping survivors of child sexual abuse, sexual assault and domestic violence than I spend actually working with clients, but the pandemic has increased their caseloads and brought more people to crisis hotlines.This increase has been especially dramatic related to marriage counseling during the pandemic. I am called in when they feel like my skills could be useful to the client.The feedback has been rewarding as motivated clients indicate they are doing better, repairing their marriages, using de-stressing and calming techniques or better regulating their emotions. A Mission Bite from CBF: Community & Hope That Will SustainOur main partners, the Cambodia Baptist Union, have been distributing rice to rural families in need for several years now. With COVID-19 pushing many families here into hunger, our partners have increased their distributions all over the country with support from CBF churches and individuals around the world.Each family is given masks, some sanitizer and enough rice and basics to sustain their family for about 2 weeks. Each family also hears the gospel and is connected to a local church--which can provide them with community and hope that will sustain their family forever.
