Woodlanders Support San Antonio Rescue Mission
Help Serve at San Antonio Rescue Mission
See Vaughn Ballinger to help

For several years the Nolan St. Gang (church members and family members) have served food and provided clothing to homeless people under the Nolan St. Bridge. Recently we have moved to the San Antonio Rescue Mission. We are blessed in this ministry to glorify the Lord.

Woodland continues to support the San Antonio Rescue Mission (SARM) both financially through our Missions Budget and in direct non-cash support by our membership. SARM is San Antonio’s only gospel mission for homeless men which means that it does not receive government support and depends entirely upon cash and non-cash donations from individual donors, churches and business organizations. The Mission provides a 42 bed facility which is fully air conditioned and heated and includes kitchen, dining room, restroom, showers, and a chapel.   It is open 365 days a year and each night provides clean clothing, showers,  a chapel service, a hot meal and a clean bed to an average attendance of about 35 homeless men.

The chapel services are conducted by various churches around the city and by the Board of Directors. In 2010, Woodland members conducted three of the Friday night services under the leadership of the Biscuit Boys, the Youth Department and the Children’s Department. In each case, members of these groups including youth and children participated in both the music and worship part of the service. More services by Woodland groups are planned for 2011.

In addition to conducting chapel services, Woodland members continue to faithfully give clothing and toiletries for the men at the Mission. At Christmas, the men were given a gift filled stocking which included pull over stocking caps hand knitted by Woodland’s Kay Ely. And recently, Linda Liebe put together hundreds of hygiene packs consisting of soap, shampoo, tooth paste, wash cloth, etc. for the men.

SARM is committed to continuing to provide a holistic ministry to the homeless community in San Antonio and to tell and to demonstrate to each man that God loves them, cares for them and through Christ, a hope for and a promise for a brighter tomorrow. Woodland Baptist Church has been and will continue to be a major partner in this ministry. Thanks be to God!
